Today, we want to show you one of the most unique cities in the world, Shenzhen, China. With its rapid growth and transformation from a small fishman village in the past, now a mega city and a hub of technology and still growing. In 1979, Premier Deng Xiaoping named Shenzhen a Special Economic Zone, meaning it would be immune from the strict Communist regime governing the rest of the country and would instead be permitted to pursue private enterprise. Shenzhen's official population was 12 million and it had a GDP of 500 billion RMB, according to the Asia Society. "Has any urban area on Earth ever grown so rapidly and changed so dramatically in such a short time as Shenzhen?" Shenzhen seems to be just in the middle of growing, in the year 2016, it's still in the building of more metro ...
Google Earth Satellite images of Nanshan Peninsula, Shenzhen, from 1985 to 2016 (every year except 2002) Witness over 3 decades of urbanization and land reclamation of a peninsula: The change from a quaint countryside to a sprawling major urban area in 40 seconds! Apologies for the rather low resolution and not ticking off those picture icons though, I completely forgotten :) Enjoy!

“In the 1950s, the people’s way of life was just as farmers,” 65-year-old Zhuang Tiefeng explained， standing on a roof pointing to areas of land now occupied by large city buildings. “After the opening up and reforms, Shuiwei village had experienced huge changes. The old way of farming gave way to new industry and business and we were given city IDs.” In 1979, Shuiwei was incorporated into the new city of Shenzhen as part of a government drive to establish special economic zones around China. Shenzhen now houses a population of over 10 million people and is widely considered one of the world’s fastest growing cities. Much of its success has come from foreign and domestic investments into new manufacturing plants. Special economic zones were established in three other cities- Shantou,...

Danish firms Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and Gottlieb Paludan Architects have won a competition to design the world's largest waste-to-energy power plant in China. Proposed for the mountainous region on the outskirts of Shenzhen, the waste-to-energy plant is expected to incinerate 5,000 tonnes of rubbish per day – approximately one third of the waste generated by the city's 20 million inhabitants each year. According to the architects, the facility will "utilise the most advanced technology in waste incineration and power generation". The huge circular building will boast a 66,000-square-metre roof, two thirds of which will be covered with photovoltaic panels, allowing the building to generate its own sustainable supply of energy. It will also feature a series of visitor facilitie...

Today's itinerary: OCT Bay, Shekou Sea World, Houhai Area, Nanao Ancient Town, Europe Town for a quick stop at IKEA for lunch, driving along Shennan Blvd., Dafen Oil Painting Village, Longhua New District/Bantian I rented a car again to show Dirk and Jessy a bit around in Shenzhen before they were going back home. They were exploring the city before by metro and visited places like the Shenzhen Museum, Lianhuashan Park, Lichi Park, Window of the World and the two major shopping areas of Dongmen and Huaqianbei on their own. So it was time to shown them a bit more of Shenzhen and it's different places and faces. Shenzhen is always referred to as a city without history that went from a fishing village to a modern metropolis in 30 years. But there is far more to see, explore and discover then...

Shenzhen is a great city, situated opposite Hong Kong in southeastern China. It is one of the biggest destinations I have arrived at so far, marking the last big city before I get to Vietnam. Ill be hanging out here for a month while I accomplish some mini “goals”… I have a talk at a international school, some road testing of the trike, a workout regiment, some visits to Hong Kong and a bunch of other things. So follow me as I take an initial ride of the city. All the points in this video are mapped out on the JaYoe Map page, so if you are interested to go exploring yourself… you will know where to go. Check out the map page at: http://jayoe.com/map/# If you are interested in getting the recumbent trike I use, do not hesitate to click on this link - http://jayoe.com/hpvelotechnikdir...
